International Conference on Elementary Processes in Molecule-Metal Surface Interactions

November 11-15, 2000

San Juan, Puerto Rico, USA

The conference will be held at the hotel San Juan Grand Beach Resort & Casino, San Juan, Puerto Rico, USA, from Saturday, November 11 to Wednesday, November 15, 2000. The objective of the meeting is to review the latest and most significant experimental and theoretical advances in small molecule-metal surface interaction relevant to fuel cell and metal surface erosion processes. The scientific program will include invited and contributed oral presentations and posters.

Topics

The latest experimental and theoretical advances in (COx, NOx,..)-Fe surface interactions and in CO-tolerant and bifunctional catalysts for fuel cells will be examined. The meeting will be structured to allow sufficient time for informal discussions among the participants to identify promising developments to be used in custom-designing metal surfaces.

Climate

Puerto Rico's tropical climate varies according to elevation and exposure to rain-bearing winds. Northeast trade winds bring heavy rainfall to the north coast, while the south coast is in the rain shadow of the mountains. San Juan receives 60 inches (1,524 millimeters) of rain; El Yunque Peak farther east receives 180 inches (4,572 millimeters); while Ponce on the south coast receives only 36 inches (914 millimeters). Rain falls each month of the year, but the heaviest rainfall occurs between June and October. The average daily humidity is 66 percent, which makes the 78º F (26º C) average lowland temperatures feel warmer. Highland temperatures average about 5º F less, and the annual range between the hottest and coolest months in highlands or lowlands is less than 6º F (3º C). The delightful climate and beautiful beaches are an important resource for tourism.
